Fab Five Documentary
Fab Five Documentary
Ok, everyone has heard of the fab five right? College basketball’s arguably most talented starting five ever, let alone that they were all freshman. The group players that I am referring to (Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, and Jimmy King) were recently the subject of an ESPN documentary.
The documentary was good considering Chris Webber himself was not included in the documentary. It was full of honesty from the rest of the four players with comments from Jalen Rose saying,” I thought he was an overrated pussy. Until I got on the floor with him, and realized he had game” (referring to former Duke/NBA player Christian Laettner).
The story did touch a bit on the subject of how much the money the NCAA and the universities are making on the backs of these athletes. Ray Jackson was quoted as saying,” We were eating cereal some nights”. Can you imagine looking up in the stands while playing and seeing a number of fans wearing your jersey but you can barely afford to buy a decent meal? Interesting thought huh? I know that college athletes are supposed to be amateurs and not receive any type of compensation for playing their respective sport but come on people, Can we make sure these players get something for the sweat and tears? Yes, I know that they are getting an education that costs $40,000 per year but the NCAA and universities are getting millions. Can we share a little of that with the athletes, maybe?
I know the thought is only a fantasy. This is not the American way, someone actually getting paid or compensated for what they are really worth? Never! What am I thinking?
