Pistons, Thunder Talking Trade?
June 4th 2009 14:33
So I sat on this for about two days as I tried to wrap my mind around this.
According to DraftExpress.com, the Detroit Pistons, who are scheduled to be around $20 million under the salary cap this offseason, (thanks mainly to the expiring contracts of Allen Iverson and Rasheed Wallace) are not done shedding salary and would like to work a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder to make it possible.
The piece says the Pistons could shed another $5 million in salary by moving inconsistent big man Amir Johnson and their draft pick (#15), to the Thunder
As a Pistons fan, I read this, and I'm like "OK, I guess either A) There's no one in this draft we like or B) Joe Dumars must really have his eye on someone in the free agent pool."
Sadly, this article decides to drive me one step closer to the bottle by outlining the Pistons plans for all of this money.
"With the money Detroit frees up, they could go after their top two free agent targets, rumored to be Paul Millsap and Ben Gordon."
There are plenty of four letter words that come to mind when I read that sentence. But, I, my fellow readers, am a gentleman and I know this is a family blog and will not utter them in this space.
Paul Millsap? Seriously? I thought we were looking at Carlos Boozer (who's not much better but that's another story)? So we're just going to pass on Boozer for Boozer-lite? We'd have to outbid Utah for Millsap, who can match any offer Detroit throws his way, thanks to Millsap being a restricted free agent. It just seems pretty stupid to go for Millsap when Boozer is floating out there, unless there's concerns about Boozer's health, which are legitimate.
Then there's Ben Gordon. Has Dumars learned nothing from the fiasco created by bring Allen "The Canswer" Iverson into the fold? Is Rip Hamilton leaving and no one told me? If I have to watch one more Pistons game where I'm looking at a three guard lineup one more time, I may just run out of my house, screaming and pulling out my hair along the way.
Other than that major issue with signing Ben Gordon, how about the fact that he's a ball hog and a chucker. Sound familiar? Iverson may have to sue Gordon for identity theft. Gordon had an insane playoff series against Boston but there is no way that I'm putting him into the mix in Detroit if I'm Dumars. He'll command way too much money and he's not that great for me to say "Yes, Ben Gordon should be in a Pistons uniform." Pass.
With the demise of the Pistons "dynasty" for a lack of a better word now behind us, I don't have much to look forward to other than this substantial chunk of cash and I've got a horrible, sinking feeling that he's going to go through it so fast and so wastefully that it's going to make Pacman Jones' strip club spending habits look tame.
I sure hope I'm wrong.
