Why the Raptors Dont Need Jose Calderon

A few years ago the Toronto fans had the Spanish fever. Jose Calderon was the best thing that could have happened to this city. Everyone in Toronto was a Jose fan over a TJ Ford fan (point guard at the time). Well Toronto, sorry to break it to you, Jose Calderon is NOT GOOD. He has never been good, and already passing his prime, he will never improve and be better than he is already.

Jose Calderon is a complementary player (which is something a point guard should not be). The only reason he was good when Ford was around, was because the two point guards had completely different styles of play and when Jose would come off the bench the Defense would not be used to his style of play, and Jose would exploit that. Okay, fair enough that's just using a D's weaknesses to your advantages, but what happened when he became a starter? With him in the driving seat we saw our winning percentage dip from 57% with Ford starting the majority of the games, to 40% when Jose started all the games. Still, Senor Jose could do no wrong in this city.

But now, as the Toronto Raptors have failed to make the playoffs for the second season in a row, fans are finally beginning to realize that... wait a minute... Jose Calderon, yes the amazing Jose, is actually not very good at all. Calderon cannot develop plays for himself, he has a mediocre halfcourt game and an even worse fast break game. He looks like chicken with his head cut off on defense, and as the quarterback of the team, he is far from holding the leadership position.

As we go into the rebuilding stages (another dark time in Raptors history), it is time to wipe the slate clean and stop all of this Jose Calderon worship. With Jarrett Jack and Calderon in Toronto, we now have point guard controversy again. Colangelo PLEASE dont make the same mistake again. This guy is now one of the highest paid on the team. Everyone needs a solid point guard. Its time to use the demand of a point guard to your advantage and make some big moves. Jose needs to go inorder for this team to have any hope in the future.

I agree to a certain extent. I feel that Jose had morphed his game around Bosh and actually had played alot better with Amir Johnson then he had with Chris Bosh.

Not necessarily, sure Amir and Jose's numbers were up a bit, but they weren't tearing down the house by any means. The Raptors need a hell of a lot more than the Amir Johnson and Jose Calderon show. I think Jose is one of our more marketable guys and has a big contract that I would love to get rid of.

I completely agree with zach. Its time for calderon to go, i actually think its completely insane that he was even offered the type of money he got when he was a mediocre point guard. please trade him!

I think i would side with Colin, I dont think we have even seen the real side that Calderon has to offer i think that his play was dampered by the over powering boss (Chris Bosh) who would only let him do his work a certain way. i think he could be alot more entertaining this year. ps great blog i enjoyed the read

] THANKKKK YOUUUU ZACHHHH! I mean Colangelo OPEN YOUR EYES and take Mr. Stewarts advice or better yet, hire the man. I mean the best comparison yet is Calderon to a headless chicken. I mean you go this spot on Zach. Calderon waits around thinking he deserves the ball every time, and when he gets it, he’s missing shots, and most of the time, costing us games. When he tries to play defensively he looks like a lost soul, like you said Zach. I think you nailed this one. Your analysis quite coherent.
